The Co-operative Housing Alternative
Co-operative housing offers an alternative to renting from a landlord for many Canadians, from young people who have little chance of owning a home because of high purchase prices, through to seniors who require accomodation but find continually escalating rents out of their reach. What is Co-op Housing? A housing co-operative is a non-profit corporation managed by the people who live there. Every resident over 16 years of age holds a membership share costing $5.00. This entitles them to an equal say in the policy, rules, and management of the Co-op. The members elect, from among themselves, a Board of Directors to manage the affairs of the Co-op. There is no landlord. |
